“We’ll Be the Hands, We’ll Be the Feet,” by Christian McIvor

Ephesians 4.15-16 reads, “15 But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.”  This short passage sums up the writer’s appeal to the church in Ephesus for unity amid diversity in the first part of Ephesians 4.  “We’ll Be the Hands, We’ll Be the Feet” is based on Eph. 4:15-16 and focuses on this message of the unity to be found in the diverse body of Christ.  While the various parts of the body may serve different purposes, all of them are necessary for the good of the whole, and all of them function in and with the life that is offered through the heart of Christ.  In recognizing this and letting ourselves be transformed and guided by God’s boundless compassion and love for all humankind, we can continually encounter new opportunities to serve as the hands and feet of Christ in the world, reaching out with that love and compassion into the spaces where it’s needed most.

Lyrics:

Open our hearts, open our minds
Let us join together as we have been designed
Let us grow more deeply into You
Let us spread Your light and keep it shining through

Each one of us, all around the earth
As a part of the Body, has our worth

We’ll be the hands, we’ll be the feet
We’ll circulate through the heart, where we all meet
Built up in love, and joined as one
Grown into Christ, we’ll see Your work through till it’s done

We will be strong, we’ll live without fear
Emboldened by Your love, we will persevere
We will stand for truth, in justice we’ll rejoice
We will speak the Word for those who have no voice

Each one of us, all around the earth
As a part of the Body, has our worth

We’ll be the hands, we’ll be the feet
We’ll circulate through the heart, where we all meet
Built up in love, and joined as one
Grown into Christ, we’ll see Your work through till it’s done

Help us to seek that we might find
Your compassion and grace for all humankind
Help us connect as one community
Abiding in Your loving unity

Each one of us, all around the earth
As a part of the Body, has our worth

We’ll be the hands, we’ll be the feet
We’ll circulate through the heart, where we all meet
Built up in love, and joined as one
Grown into Christ, we’ll see Your work through till it’s done
