Spirit of Justice: October 2022

By Bob Millikan

This month, our Spirit of Justice Team is highlighting two important focuses for October.  The first is Tackling Hunger Month, which encourages people to provide food for those in need of daily meals. Greystone will help in this effort with our Rise Against Hunger event Sunday, October 2, where we will pack 10,000 meals.  Food insecurity is very real for many in our community and around the world, so what a blessing it is to share our relative abundance.

The second thing to celebrate is the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu who was born October 7.  Desmond was known for his efforts to end apartheid and as a human rights activist.  He was recognized internationally for his anti-apartheid activism, earning a Nobel Peace Prize.  He worked to integrate black theology into African theology.  He broke color barriers, was a mediator among rival black factions, and a leader for change all via non-violent means. His spirit of justice for the oppressed can be summed up in his famous quote:

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

-Desmond Tutu
