UB4I – Not Just Letters for GBC Youth

The youth of Greystone Baptist Church were on the move once again this fall, traveling to the Fort Caswell Retreat Center for the CBF NC Fall Youth Beach Retreat from September 15 – 17.  The theme for the weekend was “UB4I”.  It may not make sense when read, but sound it out – “You Before I”.   It is an important message for students and adults alike – how can we put others ahead of ourselves?

The weekend was based on Philippians 2:1-4 from the Message, a paraphrase of the Bible written by Eugene Peterson.  That passage reads:

“f you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”

It was a great weekend of fellowship, worship, and reflection as students considered how they could put others ahead of themselves.  One way that they did so was a group Sand-Sculpture Contest on the beach. The students had to work together to create an image of a family of turtles.

There was also plenty of time for play as students enjoyed the beach and the forts that make Fort Caswell such a special place to so many students.
